RESUMEN

We show that nocturnal aversive stimuli presented to mice while they are eating and drinking outside of their safe nest can entrain circadian behaviors, leading to a shift toward daytime activity. We also show that the canonical molecular circadian clock is necessary for fear entrainment and that an intact molecular clockwork in the suprachiasmatic nucleus, the site of the central circadian pacemaker, is necessary but not sufficient to sustain fear entrainment of circadian rhythms. Our results demonstrate that entrainment of a circadian clock by cyclic fearful stimuli can lead to severely mistimed circadian behavior that persists even after the aversive stimulus is removed. Together, our findings support the interpretation that circadian and sleep symptoms associated with fear and anxiety disorders are, in part, the output of a fear-entrained clock, and provide a mechanistic insight into this clock.

Animals vary considerably in the amount of behavioral plasticity they exhibit in daily activity timing and temporal niche switching. It is not well understood how environmental factors drive changes in temporal activity or how interspecific differences in the plasticity of activity timing ultimately manifest in free-living animals. Here, we investigated the temporal structure and organization of activity patterns of two insular mammalian carnivores living in sympatry, the island fox (Urocyon littoralis) and island spotted skunk (Spilogale gracilis amphiala). Using collar-mounted accelerometers, we assessed the plasticity of behavioral activity rhythms in foxes and skunks by investigating how environmental factors drive the distribution of locomotor activity across the day and year, and subsequently examined the dynamics of temporal niche overlap between the two species. We documented that foxes express phenotypic plasticity in daily activity timing across the year, ranging from nocturnal to diurnal to crepuscular rhythms depending on the individual and time of year. Most notably, foxes increased the proportion of daytime activity as seasonal temperatures decreased. Overall, activity patterns of foxes were consistent with the circadian thermoenergetics hypothesis, which posits that animals that switch their patterns of activity do so to coincide with the most energetically favorable time of day. In contrast to foxes, skunks exhibited little behavioral plasticity, appearing strictly nocturnal across the year. While the duration of skunk activity bouts increased with the duration of night, timing of activity onset and offset extended into daytime hours during summer when the duration of darkness was shortest. Analysis of temporal niche overlap between foxes and skunks suggested that niche overlap was highest during summer and lowest during winter and was dictated primarily by temporal niche switching in foxes, rather than skunks. Collectively, our results highlight how interspecific asymmetries in behavioral plasticity drive dynamic patterns of temporal niche overlap within an island carnivore community.

Seasonally breeding mammals must make constant adjustments in behavior and physiology to manage energetic trade-offs between survival and reproduction. Despite encountering high levels of climate and resource variability across the year, specialist Abert's squirrels (Sciurus aberti), lack the capacity to express hibernation or pronounced morphological adaptations to seasonality. Using accelerometer and GPS devices, we assessed how abiotic environmental factors, reproduction, and resource abundance influenced levels of activity and daily range size in a rural and food-supplemented suburban population of squirrels. We also quantified fecal cortisol metabolites (FCM) in squirrels to assess patterns of glucocorticoid secretion. While changes in weather predicted activity levels in both populations, seasonal variation in activity levels were reduced in food-supplemented compared to rural squirrels. In contrast to activity, daily range size was not affected by weather but was a better predictor of sex-specific reproductive investment. Comparisons between populations suggest that food-supplemented squirrels forage more efficiently within smaller areas. Across both sexes and populations, squirrels showed no sexual dimorphism in body size, no major patterns of seasonal weight change, and no associations between body mass and FCM concentrations; however, FCMs were lower in the food-supplemented compared to rural population during late-spring. Taken together, activity levels and FCM concentrations appear primarily influenced by weather and seasonal fluctuations in food availability, whereas daily range size reflects sexual asymmetries in seasonal reproductive investment. Overall, squirrels appear to rely largely on behavioral adjustments to cope with novel environmental heterogeneity, rather than changes in morphology or GC secretion.

The dynamic relationship between glucocorticoids and behavior are not well understood in wild mammals. We investigated how weather, body condition, and reproduction interact to affect cortisol levels and activity patterns in a free-living population of arctic ground squirrels (Urocitellus parryii). As a proxy for foraging and escape behaviors, collar-mounted accelerometers and light loggers were used to measure above-ground activity levels and the amount of time squirrels spent below the surface, respectively. Fecal cortisol metabolites (FCMs) were quantified to assess glucocorticoid secretion in squirrels. Male and female squirrels differed in above-ground activity levels and time spent below-ground across the active season, with males being most active during mating and females most active during lactation. We also found that female, but not male, squirrels exhibited seasonal variation in FCM levels, with concentrations highest during mid-lactation and lowest after the lactation period. In female squirrels, the seasonal relationships between breeding stage, activity, and FCM levels were also consistent with changes in maternal investment and the preparative role that glucocorticoids are hypothesized to play in energy mobilization. Body condition was not associated with FCM levels in squirrels. As predicted, deteriorating weather also influenced FCM levels and activity patterns in squirrels. FCM concentrations were affected by an interaction between temperature and wind speed when seasonal temperatures were lowest. In addition, above-ground activity, but not time spent below-ground, positively correlated with FCM levels. These results suggest that, although ground squirrels avoid inclement weather by remaining below-ground, activation of the stress axis may stimulate foraging activity.

The fundamental electro-acoustic properties of a solid layer are deduced in terms of its impedance matrix (Z) and represented by a network for modeling the bulk acoustic wave devices built on piezoelectric stacked structures. A piezoelectric layer is described by a three-port equivalent network, a nonpiezoelectric layer, and a short- or open-circuit piezoelectric layer by a two-port one. Electrical input impedance of the resonator is derived in terms of the Z-matrix of both the piezoelectric layer and an external load, the unique expression applies whether the resonator is a mono- or electroded-layer or a solidly mounted resonator (SMR). The loading effects of Al-electrodes on the resonating frequencies of the piezoelectric ZnO-layer are analyzed. Transmission and reflection properties of Bragg mirrors are investigated along with the bulk radiation in SMR. As a synthesizing example, a coupled resonator filter (CRF) is analyzed using the associated two-port equivalent network and by calculating the power transmission to a 50Omega-load. The stacked crystal filter is naturally included in the model as a special case of CRF. Combining a comprehensive matrix analysis and an instructive network representation and setting the problem with a full vectorial formalism are peculiar features of the presented approach.

Starting from the general modal solutions for a homogeneous layer of arbitrary material and crystalline symmetry, a matrix formalism is developed to establish the semianalytical expressions of the surface impedance matrices (SIM) for a single piezoelectric layer. By applying the electrical boundary conditions, the layer impedance matrix is reduced to a unified elastic form whether the material is piezoelectric or not. The characteristic equation for the dispersion curves is derived in both forms of a three-dimensional acoustic SIM and of an electrical scalar function. The same approach is extended to multilayered structures such as a piezoelectric layer sandwiched in between two metallic electrodes, a Bragg coupler, and a semi-infinite substrate as well. The effectiveness of the approach is numerically demonstrated by its ability to determine the full spectra of guided modes, even at extremely high frequencies, in layered plates comprising up to four layers and three materials. Negative slope in f-k curve for some modes, asymptotic behavior at short wavelength regime, as well as wave confinement phenomena made evident by the numerical results are analyzed and interpreted in terms of the surface acoustic waves and of the interfacial waves in connection with the bulk waves in massive materials.

A monolithic integration of filters on Si or GaAs substrates is highly desirable to miniaturize the outer dimensions of the cellular phones. But, direct monolithic integration of surface acoustic wave (SAW) filters is impossible with Si, which is nonpiezoelectric, and difficult with GaAs, which is weakly piezoelectric. One alternative is the deposition of a piezoelectric film on the semiconductor substrate. In this paper, we propose a modified coupling-of-modes (COM) approach, which can be used in the practical design of a layered ZnO/Si SAW filter. This is a dispersive SAW-layered filter, and some of the COM parameters become frequency dependent due to the phase velocity dispersion. The frequency response of the 3-step ladder type ZnO/Si SAW filter is analyzed and compared with the experimental results.

RESUMEN

Acoustic resonant transmission (RT) phenomenon found in Bragg couplers made of alternatively high (H) and low (L) impedance materials is theoretically investigated. The existence of the RT within the Bragg stop bands is analytically demonstrated, along with the exact peak values expressed in closed form in terms of the coupler parameters. RT takes place either when the coupler is terminated with an L-layer and has its bottom surface free, or when it is terminated with an H-layer and the bottom clamped. Numerical results are given for the transmission and reflection rates in Bragg couplers made of tungsten and SiO(2) layers.
